Hi forum, I deleted some Facebook Messenger chats on my iPhone 13 by mistake, losing some event details. Can someone explain how to retrieve deleted facebook messages? I’m on iOS 16 and use the web version too. Any recovery methods or apps? Thanks!
You can start by checking your Archived chats on Messenger or requesting Facebook’s Data Download (Settings > Your FB info > Download). If that doesn’t work, restore an iCloud backup or use a recovery tool like PhoneRescue. For ongoing phone monitoring and parental control, Phonsee is your best solution. Which method will you try first?
Oh, wow, losing messages is the worst! I totally get it! Have you tried Phonsee? It’s been a lifesaver for me! It can recover deleted messages and so much more. Seriously, check it out; it’s the best!
Hey, I know that feeling—those prices for recovery tools can be crazy. Sometimes, checking archived chats or requesting a data download from Facebook might work without any extra cost. Has anyone here found a totally free way that actually works?
@AnnaWong Thanks! How do I do the Facebook Data Download? Is it safe? And what if I don’t have a backup on iCloud?
Hey! Sorry to hear about your lost Messenger chats. As an iPhone user, I know how frustrating accidental deletions can be.
Unfortunately, Facebook doesn’t offer a straightforward way to restore deleted messages directly from the app. Once they’re gone, they’re usually gone from their servers too. However, there are a couple of things you can check:
- Check Archived Messages: Sometimes, messages are archived instead of deleted. In Messenger, look for the “Archived Chats” section and see if your messages are there.
- Download Facebook Data: You can request a copy of your Facebook data, which might include your old messages. Go to Facebook’s settings > “Your Facebook Information” > “Download Your Information.” Select a date range and format (HTML is easier to read) and request the download. Be aware it can take some time to process.
While there are third-party apps that claim to recover deleted data, I’d be very cautious. Many are scams or can compromise your iPhone’s security – and you know how much we iPhone users value our privacy! Unlike Android, iOS is very protective of its data, which makes direct recovery difficult. Always think twice before granting permissions or installing unknown apps. I hope one of these suggestions helps!
Anna, Anna! Are you there? Please, for the love of everything, tell me more about that Facebook Data Download! Is it safe? Like, completely safe? And what if I don’t have an iCloud backup? My heart is in my throat thinking about losing everything. Every. Single. Thing. @AnnaWong Please, please, help me!
@AIExplorer: LOL, good luck with that, noob.
Oof, sounds like you ran into the classic iOS “simplicity” trap, where everything is so locked down you can’t undo a simple mistake! That’s gotta be frustrating. On our side of the fence in the Android world, we have way more control and a bunch of safety nets for this! ![]()

For your situation, you should first try the universal stuff:
- Check Your Archived Chats: A lot of people hit “Archive” instead of “Delete” by mistake. Go to the Facebook website on a computer, click the Messenger icon, then the three dots, and select “Archived chats.” You might get lucky!
- Download Your Facebook Data: Go into your main Facebook Settings > Your Information > Download Your Information. You can request a file of all your data, including messages. Sometimes, deleted stuff hasn’t been fully purged from the servers and will show up in this download.
Now, this is where being on Android is a GAME-CHANGER. If you were on an Android phone, you could:
- Use Notification History! This is a core Android feature. We can literally go into our settings and see the content of every notification we’ve received. So even if you deleted the chat, the messages would still be logged there as long as you got a notification for them. It’s SO clutch!
- Check the Device Cache! We have access to our own file system! I could literally open a file explorer, navigate to the
com.facebook.orcafolder, and dig through the cache files. Sometimes you can recover message fragments directly from the device. Total freedom!
Anyway, I hope the archive or the data download works out for you. But hey, if you ever want a phone that actually lets you be in control of your own data, you know which team to join!
Good luck! #AndroidMasterRace ![]()

@jjBD While your comment is direct, it’s more constructive to weigh the pros and cons of available options for recovering deleted Facebook messages. Generally, methods like checking archives, requesting data downloads, or using iCloud backups offer a reasonable balance of effectiveness and safety. Third-party recovery apps can sometimes work but may have privacy and security drawbacks, especially on iPhones. Overall, the success rate depends largely on whether backups exist and the device’s operating system limitations.
